Really SimpleScripts…

Upgrading WordPress used to be such a pain (although WP website would claim otherwise with their “5-minute install/upgrade” instructions) - even if it involved fairly simple tasks like downloading, uploading, deleting or overwriting files and folders using ftp! Now thanks to SimpleScripts, even that is not necessary. All I need to do is deactivate all the plugins (one click) and use SimpleScripts to upgrade my WP install (another click, and a tick to agree to its disclaimer!) - all automated and from the server. No need to download, upload, zip, unzip, delete, overwrite, or anything like that…what a relief! Cheers SimpleScripts!

Upgraded to WP 2.5

I have been trying WP 2.5 RCs over the few days on my test blog (where I tweak themes and so on), and have been really impressed with the features. Just saw the full release, and without waiting to even test it on my “test” blog, I upgraded rj… And I must say it went without a glitch. I was worried, especially as I wasn’t sure if my modified K2 RC3 theme would work, as well as the old plugins. But no problem at all. In fact all of my outdated plugins, I was able to upgrade from the Dashboard with a SINGLE CLICK…Great!!!

You can find the details of all the new features HERE, but just to name a few here - the dashboard is clean and very user friendly, you can upload multiple images and insert them as a gallery on the post, one click plugins upgrade from within the dashboard (I love this feature!), allows you to add audio, video etc with few clicks etc…Although I’m an ecto user when posting entries from my own computer, these new features are definitely attractive enough for me to post from within the WordPress system once in a while, especially when I want to post multiple images and gallery. By the way, I’m writing this from within the WP system :)

Well done WP Developers!

Posted with ecto…

After I had upgraded my WordPress installation to WP 2.1 “Ella”, I have had problems retrieving entry categories with my ecto. When trying to refresh the blog entries, the program would just hang up. After searching on the WordPress and ecto forums, I found the solution straight away. However, being a novice on php stuffs, I didn’t want to take the risk editing xmlrpc.php file right away and waited a few more days till others tested the patch. I wasn’t posting much anyway, so just managed from the WP Admin for the last few posts. Today I decided to implement the patch myself, and now my ecto works just fine with WP 2.1….and this is the proof!

The Facelift…

After spending nearly a whole day tweaking the CSS, the Header, and the Footer on the original K2 style, I have come up with this new-look random jottings…. Its quite a significant facelift compared to what I had before. From a three column theme, I have opted back to two column style. I hope you find it visually pleasing than my old theme, and also easy to navigate around. Would love to hear your comments as to where I can improve on this theme and how to make it even better to the eyes!

As for the theme, I have decided to stick with K2 theme for now - for a number of reasons. First, you can create as many visual styles as you want and stick those in style folder under the K2 theme folder. You can then choose the one you want by just going to the K2 Option page in the admin area. K2 supports widgets very nicely, so its easy to arrange/rearrange stuffs on the sidebar. It has some cool AJAX features, some of which I haven’t even tried to use yet, such as the live archives. So, there is room to do more with this theme.

And, now I have my own visual style for K2…how cool is that?…and I have called it Plain RJ 0.1.

Upgraded to WP 2.1…

Tried the new WordPress 2.1, “Ella” as a local install yesterday. Some of the added features, such as importing from WordPress, more options with links and categories, revamped editor that allows you to switch between visual and code mode through tabs, etc. are pretty cool. And these added features meant, I couldn’t wait any longer to upgrade my live WP install.

Fortunately most of the plugins that I have installed are still working and the theme that I have modified has been working without any problem as well…so all in all, I’m pretty happy about the upgrade.

I am currently creating a new visual layout for the K2 theme on my local install WP and when thats done, I’ll probably change my theme to K2…for now the old face of random jottings… stays!
