in Tamale

well, this is just a quick tablogging to let you know that i’m alive and well in Tamale. work, more appropriately lack thereof, is giving headaches - more so than the heat here. in fact days have been pretty cool since i arrived with cloudy skies and cool breeze, sometimes bordering to violent summer winds.

will probably not be able to sit down to do internet/email properly till the weekend. but will be trying to update facebook status message at least once a day (using mobile phone). so long…

travel rants…

The Wait
People are already in a holiday mood. It’s 4:30 am and they are waiting for their flights with a couple of pints of lager already in them and a pint in front of them. Their destination - Ibiza or Amsterdam or Vienna, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they needed help getting on the plane or off it. I, on the other hand, am drinking strong coffee to stay awake and going through a project document that I need to give feedback on when I reach my destination some 9 hours (of flight) away. Nonetheless, I’m also thinking about enjoying a cold beer with some local meat (sorry veggies!) when I get there at night before crashing. The early-morning news on the ITV is reporting Labour’s defeat in the local elections and the likelihood of Ken Livingstone’s defeat in London Mayoral election (and as I write these lines, he has lost to Boris Johnson).

annoyances

…at the start of the week.

Why do people not learn how to send mass email with BCC-ed address?
An additional question would be why do people unnecessarily press “reply all” when they could just press “reply” (to sender only)??

I have been getting “Happy New Year 2065″ messages from people I have never heard of before. Nepalis from all over the world, from Kanchanpur to Kalimpong to Kabul to Kansas are wishing me a “great new year”. Its a nice feeling when you receive greetings from people you know, and you can tolerate one or two extra emails even from the people you don’t know. However, when you start getting 5-10 new-year-email every day from people you have never heard of before, and its already more than a week after the new year, it starts to get irritating. Further, I don’t like my email address going around to so many people that I don’t know. It is one of the main reason you start getting spams as well. So please, use BCC to dump addresses of all those people that you want to greet en masse to, so that people reply to your greetings to YOU. Also please avoid hitting “reply all” unnecessarily - some people don’t like getting email from the unknowns!

busy, away, invisible… are you really?

Why are you always “online” and “away”? The question I usually had to answer (not much nowadays) if I replied to a ping on IM while on “away” status. We all probably do it. Show our IM status as not available (away, busy, or even invisible) when we want to pick and choose who we would like to chat with and who we would like to avoid/ignore.

“Busy” status is a strange thing (and I don’t keep my status as “busy” anymore). You’re more likely to get into trouble when you’re in a “busy” status than when you’re “away”. I have heard the same accusation again and again, about being snobbish when I used to ignore messages being in a “busy” status. That didn’t really work except to annoy many of my friends. In a way it is understandable as you are really telling them to bugger off.

forgotten in a decade…

My conversation with a friend from high school…

23 March 10:16:26 mp: Hi [...], k 6 haalkhabar?
23 March 10:31:06 [...]: hi who are you?

After my own short pause!!

23 Mar 10:33:57 mp: are you in an internet cafe?
23 Mar 10:34:22 [...]: no

I was worried he might have been at an internet cafe earlier and forgotten to log off from the IM, and somebody else was using the same computer. Just wanted to confirm if I was talking to somebody else! But he was not, and I was relieved but also perplexed. And that was the end of conversation!

I think I did the right thing by just letting him get on with his work…May be he was in a hospital signed on using his Smartphone!! Or may be he really did forget who I was :)
