Information overdose…

Every morning I wake up to BBC Radio 4’s today programme and this morning was no different, the waking part. But the news item seemed to come thick and fast this morning compared to other mornings. One of the news anchors was in Washington DC covering the US midterm elections, and he was speaking so fast about the results so far, it was difficult to take in all the information he was providing. The gist of his reporting was that the Democrats have gained a majority in the House of Representatives and are head-to-head with the Republicans in the Senate election. Right after the US election news came the news of Nicaragua’s presidential election, which former revolutionary leader Daniel Ortega won - a bad news for the US !?! I was more interested in whether they would report from Nepal on last night’s “historic” agreement between SPA-govt and the Maoist. So far, they haven’t reported it yet, but they might report later…still waiting.

On coming back to York - for better or for worse?

I have been thinking of writing on this issue for a while now. Well, at least for the last eight months or so. The thought came about when I was out one evening on a walk along the riverside with some other Nepali friends here in York. We were passed by a group of white men from the opposite direction, and on seeing us “brown” skinned people they made some racial remarks, referring to the July 2005 bombings in London. That was the first time I had ever been subjected to racial remarks in all my years in York, and to be honest, I was shocked at that time. I had lived here from 1999 to 2002 before moving to Canada, and during those three years, I don’t remember a single incident when I was being abused because of the colour of my skin. And during those years in York, I never felt threatened or felt like an alien even though it was primarily a “white” city. People always seemed warm to me, regardless of their age or gender.

After three years of “almost” incident-free stay in Canada, especially when it comes to racial issues, one of the reasons that I decided to come back to York was because of the wonderful three years that I have had here after leaving Nepal in 1999. I say “almost” incident-free when referring to my stay in Canada because I was attacked by a group of white teenagers one night at a bus stop in Vancouver - the first ever such attack that I had experienced in my life - which for some reason, I didn’t think was racially motivated then and still don’t think it was racially motivated. I think it was just some random act of criminality from those teenage boys. That night I was more annoyed with the police afterwards than with the guys who tried to beat me up! The laissez-faire approach the policemen showed to the whole incident, after I had reported it to them minutes after the incident while the boys were still no further than a block away, just eroded my belief in them and the police system. At the end I just had enough and caught a bus back home without pressing the matter further with the police.

NepaliVoices: Nepali Bloggers United!

I guess I’m a month late in finding out about NepaliVoices - Nepali are blogging. Are you reading? Its first entry says it came into being on 1 Oct 2006, and I only found out about it at the end of the month while I was checking webstats for my blog and saw quite a few redirects from NepaliVoices page. Ujjwal Acharya has without a doubt done a fantastic job in trying to compile info on Nepali bloggers around the world through this great endeavour. I knew he had compiled a list of quite a few Nepali bloggers already in his website, The Radiant Star, but it was a pleasant surprise to see an entirely new website dedicated to gathering information on the blogs by Nepalis the world over. Kudos to you Ujjwal!

Tihar in London, a-p-s, and the rest…

As usual I have been suffering from acute-procrastination-syndrome. Normally it used to be the disease of my academic life, worrying though, it has started to affect my non-academic life as well. I had planed and “promised” to write about my Tihar in London a few days ago (may be a week ago now!), but that plan hasn’t materialised yet, although I did start to write a post about my Tihar and the draft is half-way through…To be honest I probably have 10 other half-way-through drafts, which for one reason or another I haven’t finished. And if I have to honestly think of one good reason, I can think of none on why they didn’t get done other than me procrastinating…Sometimes it makes me really sick but I haven’t found a cure of my a-p-s yet! Anyway, today being the first day of the month, I just wanted to jot something down here, hoping it will make me write more as time goes by (just want to mention here as well that “As Time Goes By” (Geoffrey Palmer and Judi Dench’s sitcom) is one of my all-time-favourite tv shows)!
